Varnishing A Plate
September 30, 2016Snapshot by @grayson.morgan of me pouring varnish on his tintype. Taken at Hopscotch this year in Raleigh, NC, the tintype needs to be varnished after its initial drying to protect the silver from tarnishing. The varnish is made by grinding and dissolving gum sandarac in grain alcohol and adding lavender oil. It is then poured into the plate, covering the image in a protective seal…that smells pretty good. This is just one of the many steps to create each wet plate image. #handcrafted #oneofakind #foreverportrait #tintype #collodion #wetplate
